Abstract

10,680. Roberts, B. S. May 22. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing toothed gearing for motor-vehicles &c., and comprises essentially the arrangement of a series of concentric rings of gears, teeth, or studs integral with or attached to the face of the driven wheel or disk and adapted to be driven by a pinion mounted upon a transverse shaft. The disk A, hinged to the shaft S, Fig. 2, carries three rings a<1>, a<2>, a<3> of bevel teeth. The driving-pinion B, keyed to or formed with a sleeve C<2>, longitudinally movable on a square &c. shaft C<1>, engages any of the gears on the disk. In the changing of the gear, the pinion clears the intermediate ring or rings by being mounted with the sleeve and shaft in an eccentric bearing carried in suitable brackets, the bearing being rotatable by a pedal, while an independent lever moves the sleeve and pinion. The bevel teeth on the disk A are made short and rounded so that the pinion may engage each ring. The slidable disk R' engages the pinion for a reverse. A modification of this construction is shown in Fig. 6, in which the rings of gears or elongated teeth a<9>, a<10>, a<11>, a<12> are engaged by antifriction rollers b<8> upon spindles b<9> located between flanges b<6>, b<7> of the pinion B<2>, which is otherwise constructed as previously described. In Fig. 5, the disk A' is shown provided with a bevel-gear a<5> for high speed, while spur or flat gears a<6>, a<7>, a<8> are used for intermediate and low speeds, the sliding pinion B<1> having corresponding bevel teeth b<1> cut upon its face and spur gears b' upon its periphery. In this case the shaft C<1> has no movement perpendicularly to the disk A<1>. The reversing-wheel R<1> is connected to the disk A<1> by a sleeve S\ and is provided with a gear ring r' with which the pinion engages when moved to its extreme position. Fig. 8 shows the mode of controlling the sliding movement of the pinion. The disk E, eccentrically mounted upon the shaft F, is connected by the straps d<1> and link D<1> to the arms L<1>, Figs. 5 and 6, which terminate in a disk l<1> secured on the pinion sleeve b<3>, friction and end thrust being met by balls b<11>. The shaft F and eccentric E are rotated by operation of a hand-lever H pivoted at h and having a toothed sector h<1> meshing with the pinion G.
