Abstract

848. Chalmers, R., [Chalmers, J.]. Jan. 12. Motor road vehicles.- Relates to change-speed gearing for motor-vehicles, of the type in which the wheels are always in mesh and the changes are effected by sliding a clutching - shaft through the hollow bosses of a series of wheels, and consists in providing two clutch members upon the clutching - shaft, each comprising a projecting segmental tooth. These two members are shown at c, c<1> upon the driven shaft C, which may be slid over the propeller shaft D of the vehicle. The motor shaft A terminates in a gear pinion F, having a hollow boss adapted to engage the member c, in position I, to give a direct drive. Pinions F', F<2>, J, J<2> having hollow bosses arranged in line are supported by brackets I, the pinions J, J<2> being bevel pinions meshing with an idler J<1>. The pinions F, F<1>, F<2> are in mesh with pinions G, G, G<2> which rotate all together on a fixed spindle H. When the member c comes into position II, the engine runs free ; in position III the intermediate speed is produced. Further movement of the shaft C to the right brings the member c<1> into engagement with teeth on the boss of the pinion F<2>, in position IV, producing the third speed. A reverse results from moving the member c' into position V.
