Abstract

316,511. Chorlton, F. O. L. Jan. 5, 1929. Variable - speed and reversing gearing. - Variable-speed gearing oi the type described in Specification 290,790 in which the major portion of the driving power is transmitted through an epicyclic train to the main driven shaft, and variations of speed are obtained by a variable belt pair driving a countershaft which is connected to the controlling epicyclic element, is adapted to provide a slow forward or reverse motion of the main driven shaft. The driving shaft a has a sleeve 6 longitudinally slidable, and splined connection to the driving element c. For the main drive the sleeve is moved to the left and engages the driving shaft between projections 8, and on movement of the sleeve to the right it is held fixed against rotation by engagement with a ring 7 fixed to the casing. A slow reverse drive is obtained through the countershaft which is divided and has a bevel wheel 10 keyed to the shaft x, a wheel 13 and a bevel wheel 11 rotatably mounted on z., with a slidable double dog-clutch 12. The chain connection between the countershaft and the controlling epicyclic element may be replaced by bevel wheels and a shaft.
