Abstract

222,626. Turner, E. H. Aug. 17, 1923. Variable-speed gearing comprises an epicyclic worm-and-wheel train C, D controlled by a friction roller F which moves across a disc F<1> and has dog faces f<o>, f<x>. The planetary worms D are supported in a frame D<1> secured to the driving-shaft A of the gearing. The worm-wheel C is secured to the driven shaft B, which also carries a bevel-wheel f<2> driving the disc F' through a like wheel f<1> supported between two fixed frames H and G. The worms D are separately connected through gearing d<2>, e<2>, e to a spur wheel E fast on a sleeve Ex upon which the roller F is splined and moved to vary the speed. The gearing turns solid when the dogs f‹ engage dogs g‹ fast upon the shaft B. The roller F is held fast when the dogs f<x> engage fixed dogs g<x>. It may be arranged that this last configuration yields a reversed drive.
