Variable-speed gearing comprises an arrangement of driving and driven shafts a, f in line, with a parallel constant-driven countershaft e, the speed changes being effected by sliding together a group of enmeshed pairs of toothed gears k i, y x, h g, and a pair m l connected by an idler for reversing. There are two rings of clutch dogs s, o on the shaft f, and corresponding rings s<1>, o<1> on the shaft e spaced so as to effect the gear changes as the wheel bosses are moved into engagement. A third ring of teeth p on the shaft f is used for getting a direct drive when a loose clutch sleeve r connects the teeth p to teeth p<11> on the end of the shaft a. The gear pairs and clutch sleeve are moved together in a yoke u. The clutch dogs may be bevelled to facilitate engagement.
