Abstract
349,515. Variable-speed gearing. CARR, R. G., The Elms, Castle Terrace, Berwick-on-Tweed. Feb. 27, 1930, No. 6493. [Class 80 (ii).] A three-speed gear connecting parallel driving and driven shafts 2, 3 comprises six constant-mesh gears through all of which the power passes on one speed. On shaft 2 are a fixed pinion 5, a loose gear 6 with clutch end 12, a loose and slidable gear 8 with clutch ends 10, 11, and a fixed clutch 4. On shaft 3 are loose and slidable coupled gears 13, 14 with clutch end 16, and a fixed gear 15 with clutch end 17. Gear 8 is engaged by a fork and for top speed it is moved to engage clutches 11, 4. The drive is through pair 8, 15. For middle speed, the above clutches are disengaged, and gears 13, 14 are moved by a fork so as to engage clutches 16,17. The drive is through pair 5, 13. For low speed, the clutches 16, 17 are disengaged and gear 8 moved to engage clutches 10, 12. The drive is through train 5, 13, 14, 6, 12, 10, 8, 15. A bevel gear 7 is shown for use with a kick starter upon a motor cycle to utilize multiplying-train 6, 14, 13, 5. A worm 20 is shown for driving a tachometer. A dynamo may be driven from gear 13 or pinion 5.
