Facilitating changing speed. - To one of a toothed pair about to be intermeshed such as the pair 8, 9 there is attached a flexible ring 17 which engages the tops of the teeth of the other wheel prior to engagement, and so brings the speeds of these wheels to near equality. In the variablespeed gear shown, the gear 9 loose on the lay shaft 6 is meshed with the gear 8 fast on driven shaft 2, and subsequently brought into clutch engagement 30, 31 with its shaft to transmit power. There are two other similar pairs 10, 11 and 12, 13. For the direct drive, a gear 4 upon a sleeve 3 sliding on a square on driving-shaft 1 is adapted to effect a clutch engagement 21, 20 when the countershaft is at rest.
