Abstract

217,309. Hopkinson, G. H. March 12, 1923. Variable-speed gearing.-Clutches used in variable-speed gearing have conical engaging members 8, 9, Figs. 1 and 2, with a multiplicity of teeth like the teeth of a bevel toothed gear. The teeth may be inclined or spiral. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, loose chain gears 10, 11 are adapted to be clutched alternatively to their shaft by engagement of their internal toothed cones 25, 26 with the sliding cones 8, 9. In the form of gear shown in Fig. 7, a loose gear 32 is first meshed with its mating gear 30 and subsequently brought into clutch engagement with fixed cone member 38. According to the Provisional Specification, shallow corrugations or undulations may be used instead of teeth on the cone surfaces.
