323,692. Ross, S., and McKerrow, F. W. April 2, 1929. Variable - speed gearing comprises gears such as 3 loose on a shaft such as 4 slidable into mesh each with a gear such as 1 fast on its shaft 2. Teeth 6 5 on gear 1 and teeth 8, 7 on gear 3 are made alternately long and short sc that as gear 3 is advanced, the teeth make first a coarse, and then a fine, mesh. In order that the gear 3 may be connected to its shaft 4, internal teeth 12, 12<1> on the gear must be meshed with splines 9, 10 on the shaft. The splines 9, 10 and the teeth 12, 12' are made alternately long and short so that again a coarse engagement and later a fine engagement is effected. A countershaft type of change gearing is described.
