Abstract

396,768. Variable - speed gearing. MURPHY, W., Main Street, Randalstown, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Feb. 6, 1932, No. 3563. [Class 80 (ii).] Continuously-variable toothed or chain gearing comprises a cone or cones 1 with teeth 2 arranged in spaced parallel groups in a single spiral on each cone. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, a single cone 1 co-operates with multiple toothed gears 5, and the spacing is such that there will always be one of the gears 5 in operative mesh. Shafts 4, to which the gears 5 are splined, are geared to a common gear 6 from which the drive may be taken. In an arrangement shown in Fig. 3, two such cones 1, 1a are geared together by a rigid internally-toothed ring 9 movable relatively to the cones. In a further arrangement, the ring 9 is replaced by a silent chain. An arrangement is described with two pairs of cones in parallel, each pair connected by a silent chain.
