Abstract
399,629. Flywheels ; variable-speed gearing. TREVAN, S. N., 32, Cecil Road. Cheam, Surrey. July 14. 1932, No. 19922, [Class 80 (ii).] A variable-speed gear device acting automatically comprises at least one planetary flywheel F on a spindle a parallel to aligned driving and driven shafts d<1>, d<2> to both of which the flywheel is drivingly connected. In the form shown, a balanced frame f supporting the spindle a is loose and gears p, p<1> of different diameters rigid with the flywheel F mesh with gears s, s<1> fast on the shafts d<1>, d<2> respectively. In another form, the pair p<1>, s<1> is omitted and the frame f is secured to the shaft d<2>. In both these forms the central gears may be replaced by internally-toothed rings meshing with the planet gears outside the latter. A form is derived from the arrangement shown by employing a plurality of smaller flywheel units and adding two loose flywheels connected by internally-toothed rings to the two planet gears. The frame f may have a continuous flywheel rim. The device is adapted for transmitting a torque which fluctuates at its source and is specially applicable for driving vehicles.
