Abstract

263,516. Milne, S. Sept. 17, 1925. Driving - arrangements, variablespeed, for paper mills comprises a stepped epicyclic train controlled by cone-pulley belt gearing. Fast on a driving-shaft b is a cone-pulley j which carries stepped planet gears h, h<1>. The gears h mesh with a loose central gear e which is driven from the pulley j through belts p, m and a cone pulley unit k, w loose on the driven shaft a, which is adjacent and serves as a countershaft axle. There is also a clutch n in this control train which can be disconnected to stop the drive. The gears h<1> mesh with a loose central gear f, which is the driven epicyclic element and is connected by a chain pair o to drive the shaft a. The mill may be driven through a yielding coupling y which may comprise a single yielding plate d, or a pair of such plates secured together at their outer edges. Driving and driven shafts of this gearing may be interchanged. A slow reversed drive is obtained by allowing a hook-shaped pawl s, Fig. 2, reciprocated from an eccentric q, Fig. 1, on the shaft b to come into engagement with a ratchet-wheel r fast on the shaft a. The pawl s is normally held inoperative by a weight t<1> which is raised by a hand-lever t after the clutch n has been disengaged, to effect reversed driving.
