Variable-speed epicycdic gearing is comprised in a sectional paper-machine drive of which several may be driven from a common power shaft such as 10, Fig. 1. For each unit, there is a loose sleeve 31 on shaft 10 adapted to be connected thereto by a clutch 37. The sleeve drives one of a pair of coaxial shafts 24, 13 between the adjacent ends of which the sun-and-planet train 22. 21, 20 is arranged. The planets 21 are supported on a loose worm wheel 44 which is driven through an auxiliary variable gear and a worm. Thus by varying the ratio in, say, an expanding-pulley gear 50, the worm, not shown, is driven variably from chain 60, and so the speed of internal wheel 20 and shaft 13 are varied by controlled small amounts. The gear 50 is driven through a chain 57 from sleeve 31. A casing 17 encloses the toothed gearing.
