Abstract

295,131. Whittle, O. L. Aug. 18, 1927. Variable - speed friction gearing com prises a double o series arrangemen of the gearing described in Specification 255,349 ir which there are a plurality of tapering plates 10 axially movable on one shaft 3 with intervening spaces adapted to receive periphera positions of plates or engaging members 13 axially movable upon another shaft 6, which is moved parallel to itself to vary the speed. A second similar variable gear 14, 12 connects the shaft 6 to a third shaft 4. The third shaft 4 may be in line with the first shaft 3 as shown, and may be adapted to be connected to it by a clutch for direct drive. The third shaft may alternatively be parallel to the shaft 3 and on the other side of the shaft 6.
