Abstract
204,062. Mauvillier, B. Sept. 16, 1922, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing is rendered automatic by gyratory action. A mass i, Fig. 1, is secured to a spindle d transversely mounted in bearings c in a driving-member a. A bevel pinion e fast on the spindle d meshes with a crown wheel f secured to a driven shaft g. As the mass i gathers speed owing to the pinion e rolling on the wheel f, it tends to keep its axis fixed so as to drive the wheel f in an elastic manner. The wheel f may be flattened, when the masses i' may be secured to the ends of the spindle. A mass e<3> may balance the pinion e. Two such gears may be combined to form a differential or balance gear. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, pairs of mutually-perpendicular planetary spindles d<1>, d<2> carried by a driving-element a carry masses i<1>, i<2>, and are connected by spiral gearing e<1>, f<1> and e<2>, f<2> to the driven shaft g.
