Abstract

225,920. Johnston, J. Sept. 10, 1923. Variable-speed gearing is rendered automatic by the action of planetary unbalanced masses m each of which rotates in a plane parallel to the axis of the gearing with a cyclically varying speed. Fast on the driven shaft b is a casing c<1> carrying a diametral shaft i connected by a bevel gear pair i<1>, i<2> to a driving-shaft a. The masses m are preferably arranged in pairs to give radial and lateral balance upon diametral shafts l, l<1> which are geared together by equal pinions b<2>. The mass-carrying shafts are actuated with cyclically-varying speed by a set of three eccentric or elliptical toothed wheels, k, k<1>, k<2>, the middle wheel k<1> being loose and the outer ones fast on their shafts. The masses are moving fastest at the point where their centrifugal force tends to drive the casing c<1>.
