[Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear comprises an adjustable eccentric 53 on a driving shaft 20 which oscillates a guide ring 60 and a number of levers 73 arranged in a circle around the axis of the gear, the amplitude of this oscillation depending upon the eccentricity of the eccentric 53. The oscillatory movement of the levers 73 is transmitted by shafts 72 to a set of pinions 83 through one-way clutches 78, 82, in one direction and to another set of pinions 84 through oppositely disposed one-way clutches in the other direction. The pinions 83 are geared directly to a pinion 13 on the driven shaft 4 and the reverse drive of the pinions 84, which all mesh with a loose pinion 15 on the shaft 4, is taken through idler pinions 88, 89 to the other set of pinions so that the oscillatory movement of the levers 73 is utilized in both directions. The eccentric 53 is adjusted by means of a shaft 36, gearing 35, 34, pinions 30, 26, and a pinion 25 which is threaded onto a stationary sleeve 7. Rotary movement of this pinion thus also produces axial movement which is transmitted to a rack 69 which, through a pinion 67 on a plate 50 secured to the driving shaft 20, actuates a rack 68 on the eccentric 53 which is radially displaced along suitable guides on the plate 50. The pinion 67 also actuates another rack 66 which displaces a disc 64 radially but in the opposite direction to the eccentric 53 automatically to balance the centrifugal forces.
