592,661. Variable - speed gearing. WOOLER, J. May 8, 1944, No. 8713. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 5, 6, surrounded by a rotary casing 4 having torsion rods 33 each coupled, at one end, by an arcuate strap 23, to an eccentric block 21 on the driving shaft, and, at the other end, to one of a series of unidirectional clutches 24 on the driven shaft. A brake disc 3 may be engaged by a brake shoe 32 carried by the fixed gear casing 1 to hold the casing 4 stationary. In this condition the shaft 6 is driven through the oscillating rods 33 and the clutches 24. The speed of the driven shaft 6 may be varied by changing the eccentricity of the block 21. If the brake 3, 32 is released and the casing 4 clutched to the driven shaft 6 by a dog-clutch 30, 31, a direct drive results. The block 21 is axially non-movable, and is splined to a Z-crank 20 formed on a portion 9 of the driving shaft. The portion 9 is slidably splined to the remainder 5 of the driving shaft and can be moved axially by a nut 15 on a screw 16 by rotating the latter. Bearings 10, 19, 25 for the driving and driven shafts are provided within the rotary casing 4.
