Abstract
720,260. Variable speed ratchet gear; freewheel clutches. SCHWENK ZEMENTWERKE GES., E. May 7, 1952 [May 8, 1951], No. 11545/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group II] A shaft 32', Fig. 2, which may rotate in either. direction, carries free-wheel devices 34 and 42. The free-wheel device 34, Fig. 3, is contained within a worm 33 which drives a worm wheel 35 on a shaft 14, and the free-wheel device 42 drives a sprocket connected through a chain drive 45 to a shaft 47,' the arrangement being such that, in one direction of rotation of the shaft 32, the shaft 14 only is driven, and in the other direction of rotation of the shaft 32, the shaft 47 only is driven. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, free-wheel gears 49, 51 have a common hub 48, loosely mounted on a shaft 32<SP>1</SP>. The hub 48 is connected' to a driving wheel 31 which can be rotated in either direction, whereby a drive is transmitted through either the free-wheel gear 49 or the free-wheel gear 51 to only one of the shafts 14 or 47 respectively. An infinitely variable friction ratchet mechanism inserted between the free-wheel gear 51 and the shaft 47 includes a pair of friction pawls 58, Fig. 5, engaging the periphery of a driving wheel 59 on the shaft 47, the pawls 58 being reciprocated by a variable throw eccentric 53 on the free-wheel gear 51 so as to rotate the wheel 59. A plurality of friction pawls may be provided which are driven in sequence by different variable eccentrics.
