860,866. Reverse gear; one-way clutches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. July 15, 1957 [July 13, 1956], No. 21729/56. Class 80 (2). Means for connecting a driving member 1 to either of two driven members 3, 4 according to its direction of rotation comprises a ball 17 which is, in accordance with the direction of rotation, rolled by contact with inner surfaces of the driven members to one or other end of an inclined slot 12 in the driving member to engage internal radial projections 16 on the appropriate driven member 3 or 4, and transmit drive thereto. The driven members 3, 4 may be geared to a common output gear-wheel directly, and through an idler respectively, whereby the output wheel always rotates in the same direction irrespective of the direction of rotation of the input member which is driven by a crank 18. The driven members 3, 4 are supported by ball bearings on each other and in end plates 8, 9 fast to the member 1. The ball 17 is pressed radially outwards by a spring-loaded plate 13 at the base of the slat 12.
