Abstract

901,192. Securing together rotary parts. NOVI. Nov. 18, 1960 [Feb. 22, 1960], No. 39701/60. Class 80 (2). The hub 8 of a member such as the movable flange of an expanding pulley is axially slidable on a sleeve 9 which may be fast with the fixed flange and is keyed to a shaft 1. The hub and sleeve are coupled for rotation together by rollers 10 disposed in registering grooves 8a, 9a, the grooves 8a in the hub being wider than the rollers to provide some lost - motion. There may also be some radial play. In another application a non-expanding pulley is slidably coupled to a driven shaft by the above arrangement. In one embodiment of expanding pulley the flanges are urged together by centrifugal balls riding up a ramp formed on the exterior of the sliding flange. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a fixed flange 12 is connected to a sleeve 15 by a cover 19 and the movable flange is biased by a spring 18 reacting against a washer 17 fast on the flange hub 13. In a modification of this arrangement the fixed flange is directly connected to the sleeve on which the other flange is slidable, the flanges being biased together by a spring acting between the movable flange and an abutment on this sleeve. A variable-speed drive for the fan of a coolant system comprises three pulleys arranged in the same vertical plane and connected by a common belt, a driving expanding pulley having its movable flange controlled by centrifugal balls, an expanding pulley having a spring-biased flange and serving as a belt tensioner, and a driven non-expanding pulley which drives the fan.
