Abstract
840,524. Variable-speed gear. ATELIERS DE LA MOTOBECANE. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956; Feb. 15, 1957], No. 35087/57. Class 80 (2). An expanding V-pulley for autocycles and scooters has the axial displacement of one flange 1 controlled automatically by centrifugal balls 4 which bear on the flange and are guided in slots 3 in a freely mounted plate 2. The slots 3 may be radial (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) or inclined (Fig. 5, not shown). With inclined slots 3 a oneway clutch 5, 6 is provided between the plate 2 and flange 1 which clutch on outward movement of the balls 4 allows relative rotation between the plate and flange but restricts rotation in the opposite direction so that the balls 4 return to the centre by a different path of contact with the flange 1 thus reducing wear. As shown the flange 1 is turned from the solid but may (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) be made in two parts of different materials each of which is stamped out, the parts being connected together at their outer edges, and the inner edge of the external part soldered to a hub. The internal part may be hardened to resist wear by the balls and its inner edge may also be connected to the hub. The ball-carrier disc 2 may be cast in light alloy e.g. zinc-aluminiummagnesium-copper or be of moulded plastic.
