984,484. Centrifugal clutches. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Jan. 16, 1963 [Jan. 20, 1962], No. 1961/63. Headings F2C and F2L. The weights of a centrifugal clutch are returned by springs, the initial tension of which can be adjusted externally during running to change the engaging speed of the clutch. The pressure plate 2 of an axially engaged friction clutch is moved against release springs 21 by centrifugal weights 7 moving between a conical surface 3 on the pressure plate and radial grooves 4a in the clutch cover 4. The weights are initially tensioned by springs 8 connected to levers 9 carried by a hub 10 rotating with the cover 4 and engaged by hardened rollers 13 carried by a sleeve 12. Axial movement of the sleeve 12 through thrust, bearing 14 by an accelerator pedal link 19 or a kick-down controlled vacuum servo 18 determines the tension in the springs 8 to alter the engaging speed of the clutch during rotation. The clutch may be used in an automatic change-speed gear.
