Abstract

1,134,202. Variable-ratio friction gears. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 14 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 44498/65. Heading F2D. A variable-ratio frictional gear has driving and driven toric discs engaged by rollers 10 rotatably mounted in carriers 42 which pivot about axes 48 for ratio shift which is indicated by transverse movement of the carriers produced by fluid-pressure actuated pistons 38 on which the carriers are mounted by pivots 40, 41. The pistons 38 are slidably and rotatably mounted in fixed clyinders 34, 35, rotational movement of the pistons about their axes 47 shifting the rollers axially of the gear to accommodate relative axial movements of the toric discs produced by torque responsive loading means. Slight radial play of the rollers relative to their carriers 42 is provided to accommodate radial movement due to rotational movement about the axes 47.
