Abstract

946,850. Variable speed friction gear. W. R. ANDREWS. April 17, 1962 [Nov. 29, 1961], No. 42730/61. Addition to 911,848. Heading F2D. In a variable speed friction gear of the kind described in the parent Specification wherein discs 3, 4 on input and output shafts 1, 2 project between a pair of discs 6, 7 on another shaft 5 inclined to the input and output shafts 1, 2 to form V-shaped gaps between the discs into which friction rollers 8 are urged to make friction driving contact between the discs, the disc 6 is mounted on the shaft 5 for limited relative rotation and balls 16 between cams 15, 13 on a hub 14 fast with the shaft 5 and disc 6 urge the latter towards the disc 7 during said relative rotation. During torque transmission the roller 8 on one side of the disc 3 is urged into the V- gap whilst the roller on the other side of the disc is urged away from the V-gap which due to elasticity of the parts tends to drive the discs 6, 7 at slightly different ratios whereupon the relative rotation between the shaft 5 and disc 6 urges the latter towards the disc 7 and thus forces the rollers back to the correct position.
