Abstract

1518675 Friction clutches; differential gear R H BRAUNE 14 Oct 1975 [14 Oct 1974] 44381/74 Headings F2C F2D and F2L A clutch to which a variable axial thrust is applied to vary the slip between an output member 11 and an input member 3 comprises balls 9 engaging a race 7 on input member 3 and a race on output member 11, a thrust member 14 pressing balls 13 into pockets 12 of output member 11 (or alternatively carrying pins (52) pushed into the pockets, Fig. 3, not shown) so that the balls 13 can partially engage balls 9, and permit torque transmission. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the variable axial thrust is applied by rotation of a cam member 22 which has a face cam engaging a face cam of a fixed member 21, to move axially the cam member 22 and apply thrust through spring washers 25. The cam member 22 may be rotated by a Bowden mechanism attached at 24. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a screw connection replaces the face cams. Two clutches, A and B are shown in Fig. 1 and through them a pair of wheels may be driven from input member 3, one wheel 5, driven through clutch A, being shown. Differential operation of the clutches A and B can provide differential rotation of the wheels, or steering.
