Abstract

824,926. Variable-speed gear. SHAW, T. W. Aug. 29, 1956 [June 25, 1955], No. 18417/55. Class 80 (2). A planet carrier 8 of a bevel or spur planet gear, having side wheels 2, 3 secured respectively to input and output shafts 1, 7, is driven from the input shaft 1 through a variable gear 15, 23 and two-to-one spur gear 24. The variable gear comprises an output friction wheel 23 which swings with the spur wheel 24 about the input shaft 1 to penetrate variably a spring- loaded expanding wheel 15, driven by the input shaft 1 at the same speed and in the same direction. At minimum ratio setting, one-toone, 23A, of the variable gear, the planet carrier is driven forwards at half input speed, so that the output 7 is stationary. As the ratio is increased to a maximum at 23B, the speed of the planet carrier is reduced and the output shaft 7 rotates backwards at speeds increasing towards, but not equalling, that of the input shaft 1.
