Abstract

1296423 Variable speed gears U GIPPERICH and H GIPPERICH 25 June 1970 [26 June 1969] 30899/70 Heading F2D A uniformly variable speed gear (e.g.from reverse through stop to forward ratios) includes a differential gear 210 with two central gears each fixed to a shaft 202, 203 coaxially rotatable with a carrier 215, 222 of planet gears 220, 221 meshing with both central gears, one of the shafts 202 co-rotatively and axially slidably mounting a wheel 206 whose periphery engages a friction disc 204. This may be connected (e.g. by gears 207, 208 or a further non-slidable wheel engaging the disc) to rotate at a fixed ratio of the speed of the shaft 202. Drive, e.g. from an electric motor, may be supplied either to shaft 202 or the disc 204. The gear output may be from the carrier 215, 222 either via a single shaft coaxial with the shafts 202, 203 or via a further differential 211. Control of the axial position of the wheel 206 and therefore the ratio may be via an arm 236 moved by a D.C. electric motor 243-driven screw 237. A tacho-generator 251 on the motor 212 (e.g. an I.C. vehicle engine) may selectively connect the motor 243 to a source of power 256 via arms 252, 253 and contacts 257 ... 259 so as to maintain the engine 212 speed substantially constant.
