Abstract

1503410 Variable speed gear; screw and nut gearing ARMYTAGE BROS (KNOTTING- LEY) Ltd 30 July 1976 31783/76 Headings F2D and F2Q [Also in Divisions B3 and G3] A variable ratio drive for a copy-controlled machine tool slide comprises two electric or hydraulic motors 4, 6, driving respective input members 36 of a planetary or screw-and-nut differential gear, the output member 24 of which can thereby be driven at speeds varying from zero to a maximum in both directions by varying the relative speeds of the motors, the stationary output condition being produced when both motors rotate at equal speeds, thereby avoiding static friction on starting. The motors may themselves be variable speed motors or may drive through variable speed gears. In Fig. 2 the relative speeds of the hydraulic motors 4, 6 are controlled by a valve 48 controlling the exhaust from the motors in accordance with a template-controlled stylus 52, the valve body being mounted on a tool slide 44, traversed by a screw 40 driven by the differential output shaft 24, Fig. 1.
