Abstract
1420697 Clutch control; hydraulic transmissions; toothed gearing PHILADELPHIA GEAR CORP 22 May 1973 [7 June 1972] 24274/73 Headings F2L F2Q and F2W A load-sharing drive to two, three or other number of pinions 31, 32 driving a bull gear 30 of a cement grinding mill, and driven by individual motors 10, 20, includes in the drive path of at least one pinion a clutch 22 the torque capacity of which is varied by a signal from a differential amplifier 41 comparing signals from transducers 16, 26 sensing the power input to the motors 10, 20, as by voltage and current transformers 14, 15. The clutch 22 may be of electromagnetic, hysteresis, eddy current, hydrodynamic, hydroviscous or centrifugal clutch type, and is permanently slipping, for which purpose speed reducers (or increasers) 13, 23, arranged in each power path, have different ratios; the pinions 31, 32 have slightly different numbers of teeth; or the drive motors may operate at slightly different fixed speeds. In Fig. 1 the clutch 22 is hydroviscous controlled by clamping force by a servo valve 45 controlled through a summing junction 42 and power amplifier 44 by the combined output of the differential amplifier and a pre-set potentiometer 43. The power path to the other pinion 31 may include a fixed capacity clutch and control 11 used for starting. Where three pinions are used the variable clutch of the third pinion may be controlled by comparison of its motor supply with that of either the second or first pinion.
