Abstract
742,914. Variable speed gear. MANGIN, R. Nov. 23, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1952], No. 32483/53. Class 80(2) An automatically variable ratio gear, for vehicles, &c., between driving and driven shafts 1, 7, comprises a differential, consisting in the form shown of an internally toothed annulus 6, stepped planet gears 10 in a carrier 11, and a sun gear 12, drive passing through a torque responsive coupling 2 and an auxiliary shaft 4 to the annulus 6 via a gear 5 and through expanding pulley 14...17, 21...24 and V-belts to the sun gear, while the planet carrier is fast on the driven shaft 7, the axial positions of the movable flanges 15, 17 and 21, 23 of the expanding pulleys, and hence the velocity ratio, being determined by the force produced by the torque responsive coupling 2 and by an opposing force produced by centrifugal means 37. The sizes of the annulus 6, planets 10 and sun 12 are so proportioned that the planet carrier rotates with an angular velocity which is the algebraic mean of the angular velocities of the sun and annulus. The torque responsive coupling 2 consists of a pinion on the driving shaft having helical teeth engaging a sleeve 3 acting as a nut. The auxiliary shaft 4 is hollow and can rotate on the driving shaft. The centrifugal means comprises balls 37 engaging surfaces 39, 41 on the pulley flanges 15, 16. These surfaces are arcs of radii such that, for a given angular velocity of the driving shaft, the axial component of the force acting between the balls and surfaces, and tending to separate the pulley flanges, is constant, irrespective of the radial position of the balls. The movable pulley flanges 15, 17 and 21, 23 are connected to each other by rods 18, 25, respectively. The movements of the two sets of pulley flanges are co-ordinated by a member 28 and bearings 19, 27 connected to the movable flanges by the rods 18, 25, so that separation of the flanges 14, 15 is accompanied by a closing movement of the flanges 21, 22, &c. The flange member 28 has trunnions 29 rotatable in fork members 34 on a rocking shaft carrying levers 36. A removable stop can be engaged by one of the levers 36, in which position no drive passes to the driven shaft 7; when the lever moves away from the stop, forward drive is obtained. By taking away the stop and moving the levers 36 by hand, reverse is obtained.
