795,234. Variable-speed gearing. WEBER, M. Aug. 30, 1954 [Sept. 10, 1953], No. 25107/54. Class 80 (2). A variable-speed friction gearing between driving and driven shafts 35, 36 comprises planetary rollers 53 slidable in the direction of their axes and engaging a friction annulus 49 which is movable axially. of the shafts 35, 36 to vary the speed ratio. A coupling 41, 42, 52 transmits an axial thrust proportional to the torque transmitted to press the rollers 53 against the surfaces they engage. As shown, the rollers 53 are mounted on spindles carried by a support 37 loose on the shaft 35. The rollers have surfaces engaging a cone 38 on the driving shaft 35 and stationary cones 54. The annulus 49, which is driven by the rollers 53 upon rotation of the driving shaft 35, is splined to a sleeve 47 connected to the driven shaft 35 by the torsion coupling 41, 42. The sleeve 47 is connected to the shaft 35 by a thrust bearing 40. Thrust is also transmitted through the coupling to the rollers 53 by spring washers 44 the axial pressure of which is adjustable. The axial position of the annulus 49 is varied by a control member acting through a pivoted arm 51. In a modification the annulus 49 is non- rotary and the shaft 36 is driven through a bevel gear which engages a bevel gear fixed to each roller 53. In another modification the rollers are supported only by friction and toothed gearing and in another modification the roller carrier forms the driven member of the friction gearing.
