680,812. Variable-speed gearing. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.- GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. Sept. 2, 1949 [Sept. 2, 1948], No. 22841/49. Class 80 (ii). A friction epicyclic gear embodies friction rollers 14 engaging inner and outer track members 55, 57, and spaced by a cage member 52 fixed to the driven shaft 17. The track member 55 is fixed to and supports the driven annulus 12 of a toric friction gear having rollers 23 and an annulus 18 fixed to the driving shaft 10. The track member 57 is driven from the shaft 10 by a collar 90 through wedging rollers 100, a collar 92 and sleeve 93. Thus the pressure between the friction rollers 14, 23, and their track surfaces varies with the torque transmitted due to the wedging action of the rollers 100. The speed of the driven shaft 17 is varied by controlling the speed of the annulus 12 by varying the inclination of the rollers 23. Each roller 23 is carried on a shaft 63 fixed to a plate 61 journalled at 69, 60, in the gear casing. Each plate 61 has a rod 64 located between a pair of spaced plates 67, 68. Thus all the rollers 23 are tilted when one of them is moved by adjusting gearing 60<SP>1</SP>, 65, 66.
