Abstract

1515687 Variable-speed gear GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 10 Nov 1976 [15 Nov 1975] 47198/75 Heading F2D A steplessly variable transmission for a motor vehicle comprises a torque-splitting sunring-planet train having one element, e.g. the carrier 15, connected to a final parallel output shaft 24 through a dog-clutched forwardreverse gear 18 ... 26, and its other two elements, sun 12, ring 14, connected to input and output members 11, 11a of a stepless gear such as an expanding wheel belt gear or a friction gear, in such a manner and so dimensioned that the said two elements 12, 14 rotate in opposite directions during normal operation and a zero (or slightly negative) output speed is produced at one end of the speed range, giving a geared neutral. Throughout the range the carrier 15 rotates oppositely to the input shaft Y, and direction change between the output pulley 11a and ring gear 14 is produced by a wheelpair z x. The Specification discusses the recirculating torque in the system and shows it to be a minimum with the arrangement used.
