Abstract

The input shaft carries a split cone pulley which drives a parallel shaft and pulley through a belt. These input and driven shafts drive, through bevel gears, the two opposite bevel gears which mesh with the gear carried by a crown wheel which drives an output shaft. When the pulleys are running at the same speed, the bevel wheels also run at the same speed but in opposite directions so that the crown wheel remains stationary. When there is a difference in speed between the pulleys the output shaft rotates and its direction of rotation depends on whether one pulley is rotating faster or slower than the other pulley.
