Abstract
798,214. Hydraulic variable speed driving gear. HODGKINS, H. W., HASTINGS-. May 7, 1956 [Feb. 7, 1955], No. 3525/55. Class 69 (2). A torque converter embodying a gear pump and an hydraulic motor comprises a driving shaft 1, a driven shaft 2, two epicyclic gear trains 9, 14, 12, and 10, 15, 13, mounted in an oil-tight casing 4 and acting as a pump and a motor, the casing being movable along shaft 2 to vary the capacity of the gear trains, and members 19, 17, 21 and 20, 18, 22, having projections which engage between the teeth of the gears to blank off the non-engaging portions of the teeth. Mechanism 31 moves the casing 4 when the pump and motor capacities are to be altered. A reservoir 25 feeds the gears via bores in the shaft 2. The gears 9, 10 and 12, 13 are mounted on shafts 5, 6 in the casing; the sun-wheels 14, 15 are keyed on shafts 2, 16 respectively and do not move axially. Members 17, 18 have rims 29, 30, which ensure that they move with the casing. Spacing members 24A, 24B are cut away to accommodate members 19-22. A thrust race 43 forms a stop to prevent disengagement of gears 9, 12 from gear 14. If gears 10, 13 become disengaged from the gear 15, a gear train 23A-23C keeps them in step with gear 15 to ensure re-engagement. Alternatively, the shaft 2 can be driven and the casing 4 used to drive the shaft 1 at any speed from zero to that of shaft 2.
