Abstract
811,203. Expanding pulley gearing; gearing for stopping and starting machinery. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 12, 1957 [July 17, 1956], No. 22145/57. Class 80 (2). Expanding pulley belt gearing for use in washing machine drives comprises a shaft 13 to which is secured one pulley flange 16 having a hub 17 upon which the other pulley flange 18 is axially slidable, each flange having an inner frusto-conical belt engaging face 31 disposed at a smaller angle to a plane normal to the axis of the pulley than an outer belt engaging face 32. When a control solenoid 23 is energized a spring 26 connected to the solenoid armature 24 is tensioned to turn a bell-crank lever 25 and engage its flat end 28 with a bearing ball 29 in the end of the hub 19 of the pulley flange 18, which is accordingly slidden leftwards to engage a V-belt 15. There is some slack in the V-belt 15, so that prior to energization of the control solenoid 23, no torque is transmitted from an electric motor 12 driving the shaft 13, &c. The V-belt 15 is first engaged by the smaller radius frusto-conical faces 31 of the pulley flanges 16, 18, to transmit drive at a low ratio. The small angle of the inner frustoconical belt engaging faces 31 causes the V- belt 15 to climb slowly outwards of the pulley towards the outer frusto-conical faces 32 as drive is taken up, so that the initial torque demanded of the driving motor 12 as the washing machine mechanism accelerates is not excessive. The V-belt 15 finally engages the larger radius frusto-conical faces 32 of the pulley flanges and drive is transmitted at a higher ratio.
