Expanding-pulley gearing comprises a driving shaft, which may be the shaft of an electric motor, carrying a gear-wheel meshing a second gear-wheel on a layshaft carried by a twoarmed frame rotatable about the axis of the motor &c. shaft, an expanding pulley carried by the layshaft driving through a belt to a fixed pulley on an output shaft, a movable flange of the expanding pulley being biased by spring or centrifugal force towards a fixed flange thereof and the arrangement being such that when a substantial load is placed upon the output shaft, as when starting the motor &c., the frame rotates against belt tension to force the expanding-pulley flanges apart and thereby obtain a lower gear ratio.
