Abstract

989,894. Expanding-wheel gear. J. WALK. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 3984/62. Heading F2D. A variable diameter pulley is formed by segments 7 grooved at 8 to receive a V-belt 3 and in screwthreaded engagement with rods 10 which are rotatably mounted in radial grooves in a disc 4. Each rod 10 is rotated in order to adjust the radial position of the segments, by a bevel pinion 11 meshing a common bevel pinion 12 loosely mounted on a hub of the disc 4 and geared to an electric motor 16. The V-belt 3 is driven by a pulley 2 on the shaft of an electric motor 1 which is mounted in a slide 5 and biased by a spring 6 to maintain the belt tension constant as the pulley diameter is varied. Drive is taken from the variable diameter pulley by way of a V-belt pulley 14 fast with the disc 4.
