Abstract

641,745. Expanding - - pulley gearing. SCHLAEPFER, J. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35431. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1946. [Class 80(ii)] An enclosing gear box 1 houses two pairs of expanding conical pulleys each pulley comprising two flanges 6, 7; 10, 11; 15,16; 19, 20, connected by V-belts 12, 21 and driven by an electric motor 4 axial displacement of which varies the working diameters of the pulleys and hence the speed of a driven shaft 22. The flanges 6, 19 are axially fixed, flanges 7, 20 have positive axial movement and the remaining ones, loaded by a spring 17, are self-adjusting. A bushing 8 and key 9 provide a further drive of constant speed ratio. Guides 2 fixed to the box 1 seat a motor carrying slide 3 having a rack 27 engaged by a pinion 26 controlled by a gear change lever 28, and an indicator 38 and a scale 39 show the transmission ratio setting. The drive may be interrupted by outward movement of the lever 28 which causes a tooth 31 to move a bell-crank lever 32 whose fork 35 engages a bush 36 of the flange 15 thereby slackening the belt 21. The pulleys of each pair have different diameters and each pair of pulleys have different conical inclinations.
