Abstract
617,940. Expanding pulley gearing. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., and JOHNSON, A. Sept. 27, 1946, No. 28864. [Class 80 (ii)] In expanding-pulley gearing, simultaneous positive adjustment of a driver A, B and follower C, D is effected by a chain K engaging oppositely handed pairs of nuts F, G and H, J, each pair being operatively connected to the opposite flanges of one pulley. As shown, the pulleys are simularly constructed, one flange, as B, being controlled by a transverse pin B<4> therein passing through an axial slot in the input sleeve Q and engaging a sleeve B<3> rotatable in a sleeve G<2>, and the other flange, as A, being controlled by a transverse pin A<4> therein passing through axial slots in the sleeves Q, B<3> and engaging a rod A<3> rotatable in a sleeve F<2>. The sleeves F<2>, G<2> are slidably but non-rotatably mounted in the gear. casing and are threaded to engage the nuts F, G. The input and output sleeves Q are splined to the shafts O<1>, S of a driving electric motor and a driven gear-box respectively, a tachometer generator T being also driven. The chain K is driven from a sprocket L, Fig. 2, which may be actuated by a hand wheel or remote control means, a tension pulley M being provided to allow the chain K to be slacked clear of the nuts F, G and H, J for independent initial adjustment thereof. The pulley surfaces may be formed with radial, grooves U to reduce belt slip. Lubrication of the sliding surfaces is provided through grease nipples (not shown) on the pulley bosses and oil passages W, a flexible boot V preventing the lubricant reaching the pulley surfaces.
