Abstract
662,601. Gearing varying in ratio as drive is applied to one or other end shaft; ratchet clutches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 5, 1949 [Sept. 10, 1948], No. 22914/49. Class 80 (ii) Gear pairs 20, 37 and 36, 19 of different speed ratio transmit power from the shaft 18a of a startergenerator or like dual-purpose accessory to a shaft 28 connected by gears 30, 41 to an aircraft engine shaft, and vice versa, respectively, according to which of the shafts 18a, 28 is the driver. The gears 19, 20 are fast with the shaft 18a and the gears 36, 37 co-act with the shaft 28 through oppositely-acting one-way clutches 32, 33, each having spring-connected sprags 35, Fig. 2, with cylindrical extensions 35a supported on a non-torque-transmitting cage 34. The gears 36, 37 have bearing on the shaft 28 through collars 39 engaging rebates 37b on the gears and bolted thereto. The gearing is enclosed in a casing 2 supporting through a mounting member 4, the starter-generator 18 and itself supported on the power plant casing 6, to which is secured a member 21 supporting the shaft 28 through bearings 22, 23. The member 21 locates in an opening in the casing 2 which is large enough to permit passage therethrough of the gears 36, 37 on removal of the casing 2 from the casing 6. The clutches 32, 33 are lubricated from a conduit 42 via a passage 43, nozzle 44, the interior 29 of the shaft 28 and bores 45 therein, a lubricant retaining shoulder 46 being provided.
