Abstract
611,500. Toothed gearing. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FONSECA, E. C. M. D'A. May 2, 1946, No. 13393. [Class 80 (i)] A mechanical transmission in which driven shafts 6 are capable of limited universal movements with respect to a driving shaft 5, comprises primary carriers 10a, 10b mounted for movement round the axis of the shaft 5, secondary carriers 16 mounted in the primary carriers, and gearing connecting the shafts 5, 6. The primary carrier 10a is rotatably mounted in a cylindrical housing 7 by means of extensions 13, and the primary carrier 10b is independently mounted on the extensions 13. Each secondary carrier is rotatably mounted at x within the corresponding primary carrier, x being the centre of generation of the common surfaces of the two carriers. A lateral extension 20 on each secondary carrier passes outwardly through its associated primary carrier and an opening 21 in the gear housing 7. The output shafts 6 are supported in bearings 22 in the extensions 20, and the input shaft 5 is supported in bearings 14 in the extensions 13 and carries at its lower end a gear-wheel 8 which may be driven in any convenient manner. A worm-wheel 25 mounted at x on each secondary carrier 16, meshes with a worm on the associated shaft 6 and a common worm on the driving shaft 5. A hole 28 fitted with a plug 31 is provided in the housing 7 through which oil may be introduced for lubrication pruposes. Leakage of oil from the housing is reduced to a minimum by sealing strips 18, 19 between the secondary carriers, primary carriers and housing.
