Abstract
660,497. Toothed gearing; universal joints. STOECKICHT, W. G. June 3, 1949 [April 30, 1949], No. 14999/49. Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii) In an epicyclic gear employing double helically toothed wheels, one or more of the sun or annular gears are each formed by two rings of oppositely directed simple helical teeth, the rings being coupled together with capacity for small relative movement to ensure.even distribution of load. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a shaft 3 supported in a casing 1 carries a planetcarrier 4 having planet pinions 6. The pinions are provided with double helical teeth and mesh with a sun wheel 7 secured to a shaft 8 which is journalled in the casing 1 and in the shaft 3. Also engaging the pinions 6 are two annuli 9, 10 comprising the reaction gear member, and each annulus is provided with a set of simple helical teeth. The annuli 9, 10 are connected to the casing 1 by double toothed couplings 11, 12 having two sets of helical teeth so constructed that each coupling allows a degree of radial and rotative freedom for self-adjustment between the annuli. The double wheel 9, 10 is axially located with respect to the casing 1, the other gears being located by their teeth. In a modification, Fig 2 (not shown), in which the planet carrier comprises the reaction member, two annular rings of simple helical teeth are directly interconnected by a double toothed coupling and one of the rings is connected by a further double toothed coupling to a driven shaft. This second coupling is provided with contact rings axially locating the double annular wheel. The sun gear is not provided with normal bearings but is supported by the three or more planet pinions and is connected with the driving shaft by a double toothed coupling. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), showing two sun wheels and a stationary planet carrier supporting stepped planets, each sun gear is formed by two rings of simple helical teeth. Each pair of rings is interconnected by a double toothed coupling which in turn is connected by a further double toothed coupling to the operative shaft. One of the sun gears forms the axially locating member of the gear system.
