Abstract

922,152. Testing gearing for noise. REGIE NATIONALE DE USINES RENAULT. Sept. 21, 1959 [Oct. 7, 1958], No. 32060/59. Class 80 (1). Apparatus for determining the sound level produced by a variable-speed gear for vehicles during its operation under various conditions comprises means for applying a driving torque to either the input or the output shaft of the gearing and applying a braking torque to the other shaft. A gear-box 8 is mounted on a cradle of the apparatus and its input and output shafts are operatively connected to shafts 6, 7 which are provided with electromagnetic eddycurrent type retarding devices 13, 14 and which are connectable through alternatively engageable synchromesh dog clutches 9, 11 to shafts 3, 2, shaft 2 being directly driven by an electric motor 1 and shaft 3 being driven through belt and pulley gearing. The transmission ratio between the shafts of the apparatus is such that when driving torque is applied to the output shaft it rotates at a lower speed than does the input shaft when driving torque is applied thereto. This is so that normal operating conditions are approached, since when engine braking is being used an intermediate ratio is generally selected. The reaction torque applied by the retarding devices 13, 14 can be varied.
