1334908 Vehicle power take-off CARMICHAEL & SONS (WORCESTER) Ltd 3 July 1972 [2 July 1971] 30995/71 Heading B7H A power take-off device for driving apparatus (not shown) carried by a vehicle includes an housing 14 mounted on the gear-box 13 and including a p.t.o. shaft 40, 42 driven from a element mounted on the output shaft 20 of the gear-box 13. As described the housing 14 is bolted on to the gear-box 13, a portion 25 of the housing 14 replacing a cover-plate (not shown) of the gear-box. A gear element 22 is fixed to a splined end 21 of the gear-box output shaft 20 and is journalled in bearings 26 in the housing 14. A drive shaft 17 is journalled in bearing 29 in element 22 and in bearing 28 in housing 14 and forms the first shaft 17 of a series of shafts 17 which drive the rear wheels 11. The shaft 17 can be connected to the element 22 by a clutch consisting of splined portions 30, 31 on the shaft 17 and element 22 respectively and a movable splined ring 32. The element 22 is formed with a gear 23 which meshes with a gear 36 freely rotatable on shaft 35. A second gear 37, also freely rotatable on shaft 35, meshes with a gear 39 fixed to the p.t.o. shaft 40. The p.t.o. shaft 40 can be connected to the output shaft 20 by a clutch consisting of splined portions 43, 44 on the gears 36, 37 respectively and a splined ring 45. The splined rings 32, 45 are moved by a common operating member 46, the arrangement being such that when one clutch is engaged the other is disengaged, and vice-versa. The p.t.o. shaft 40, 42 may be used to drive a winch, the barrel of a cement mixer, or, in the case of a tractor, may be used to drive an air pump.
