423,267. Epicyclic variable speed gearing. NORMANVILLE, E. J. DE, Haydon House, Kingsbury, Middlesex, and DE NORMANVILLE TRANSMISSIONS, Ltd., Humber Road, Coventry. Nov. 4, 1933, No. 30686. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] The carrier C<1>, Fig. 1, is fixed to the driving shaft a, and the annulus e to the driven shaft b, the sun wheel g being provided with a brakedrum k. A freewheel clutch l is interposed between the driving and driven shafts, so that when the drum k is free there is a direct drive through this freewheel clutch, while when the drum is braked there is an overdrive, and the clutch overruns. A freewheel clutch n is interposed between the drum k and the casing so that when the device is used in a motor vehicle engine-braking may be obtained. In a modification, this freewheel clutch is connected to the casing through a slipping brake to limit the amount of braking obtainable.
