643,600. Reversing gearing. GRETENER. E. March 2, 1948, No. 6589. Convention date, March 4, 1947. [Class 80(ii)] Power from a motor 3 is transmitted to a shaft 9 through one or the other of oppositely rotating bevel gears 1, 2 adapted to be alternatively engaged by a friction disc 5 axially slidable with its shaft 8 which is coupled at 10 to the output shaft 9. The movement of disc 5 is controlled by a control shaft 13 which is connected to one of the crown gears 14 of a differential 15, the other crown gear 16 of which is connected to shafts 8 and 9 by means of a coupling 12. Any angular displacement between the shafts 13 and 9 therefore results in a movement of the cage 17 of this differential which is transmitted by a shaft 19 and bevel gears 20, 21 to an arm 22. This arm 22 is connected by ropes 27, 28 wound for a few turns around a power driven drum 29 and connected to the ends of another arm 24 so that movement of the arm 22 in one direction or the other tightens one or other of the ropes 27, 28 on the drum 29 which acts as a capstan to operate the arm 24. The movement of arm 24 is transmitted through bevel gears 26, 33, shaft 34, gear and quadrant 35, 36 and lever 37, to actuate the shaft 8 and disc 5 to engage one or other of bevels 1, 2 to effect a drive of the shaft 9 in a direction to reduce the angular displacement between the control and output shafts 13, 9 and restore the balance of the differential 15. The capstan drum 29 may be driven by a separate motor 30 or it may be driven from the motor 3. A variable ratio transmission may be incorporated in the drive from the motor 3 to the bevels 1, 2 which is controlled so that the speed of these bevels is maintained just above that required of the shaft 9 so that slip is reduced to a minimum. In order to prevent " hunting " in the mechanism a hydraulic damping device may be introduced in order to make the control responsive in addition to the first derivative of the speed difference between the control and output shafts.
