592,849. Differential governors. HAMILL, W. W. July 31, 1944, Nos. 14552/44 and 1485/45. [Class 57] A differential speed governor comprises a constant speed shaft 15 on which is mounted a fly-wheel 2 that carries a nut 3 co-operating with a thread 7 on a sleeve 6 splined to a shaft 16 driven by the body to be controlled. The sleeve 6 carries a collar 10 by a ball-bearing 12. teeth on the colla engaging teeth on a pinion 8 so that as the speed of the shafts 15, 16 vary, the sleeve 6 moves axially of the shaft 16 and rotates the pinion 8 to operate mechanism to correct the speed variation. When the speed variation is sufficient, springs 13 engage the sleeve 6 to tend again to centre it. The shafts 15, 16 may drive parts of an epicyclic gear having pinions or bevels. The shaft 15 may be driven by a separate motor or from the machine to be controlled through a slipping clutch.
