Abstract
643,412. Centrifugal governors. HARWOOD, C. D. March 15, 1948, No. 7754. [Class 57] A governing mechanism for an engine &c. comprises a centrifugal governor driven at a speed proportional to that of the engine and adapted to control the latter through a differential mechanism the centre member 25 of which is connected to the engine regulating means 33, one outer member 19 is continuously rotated and the other outer member 24 is adapted to be pivotally coupled by the action of governor to either a drive member 37, continuously rotated at a speed greater than that required to hold the centre member stationary, or to a braking surface 36. The member 19 is driven from a shaft 7, and in the opposite direction. through reduction gearing and the drive member 37 is rotatably connected to and axially slidable on the shaft 7, which also drives a ball carrier member 9 of the governor having five radially guided balls 10. Outward movement of the latter causes a cup 12 and a clutch member 39 to be displaced to the right against a spring 14, thus allowing a clutch plate 34 rotatably connected to the differential member 24 to engage the braking surface 36 which thereby causes the centre or planet member of the differential to be rotated and the engine regulator moved to decrease speed. If the engine speed falls below a predetermined value the governor spring forces cup 12, member 39, and drive member 37 to the left causing clutch plate 34 to be moved away from the braking surface and to be driven at the speed of the shaft 7 which causes the centre member and the regulating means to be moved to increase speed. At the set governed speed the clutch plate is partially engaged by the drive member and the braking surface so that slip occurs and the centre member is held stationary. The loading of the governor spring may be adjusted. A friction clutch is inserted in the transmission between the centre member and the engine regulating means so that the latter may be independently adjusted. In a modification the differential gear comprises concentric " outer" members spaced apart by balls spring-urged against the larger diameter member. Between the balls project rollers mounted on the centre member of the differential.
